2015 No Pants Metro Ride

2015 No Pants Metro Ride

Sunday was the day to forget about all the bad in the world and focus on some simple things.  Like riding the Los Angeles metro Red line with no pants.
This Event, in its 7th year here in Los Angeles, is initiated by Improve Everywhere, a group dedicated to making sure we don't all take ourselves too serious and whose tagline is "We create Scenes".
The pants optional riders are instructed to act casual and go about the business of striding through Union Station and riding the metro trains as if they weren't in a business suit and boxers or frilly briefs and a t-shirt.
Watching peoples reactions is the best part of the ride.  One guy had a smile from ear to ear, as new people hopped on and off the train for the multiple stops between Pershing Square and Hollywood.
After two short hours, the ride ended at the Hollywood and Highland station where the group headed upstairs and proudly upstaged the usual talent on Hollywood Blvd and headed off to a local bar to continue the party.

Robolights - Palm Springs, CA

The Art Work of Kenny Irwin Jr

RoboLights, the countries largest home decorated holiday display in Palm Springs CA

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much. Maybe a couple of robots made from spare parts in some guys backyard, surrounded by junk and a chain link fence. I couldn't have been more wrong. The assault of lights hits you when you turn onto the street. I was so amazed, I almost crashed. It was amazing, actual beyond amazing. It's seriously the best $5 you will ever spend.

In a neighborhood that was once home to some of Palm Springs movie royalty, is the residence of the artist Kenny Irwin Jr.  Irwin, who appeared on Conan in 2010 has been making these sculptures for over 20 years.  His Father's house takes up several acres, with 8 million lights, several giant inflatables, and over 150 sculptures spread out over the garden. It's almost impossible to take it all in on the first go around.

From demented gingerbread men to a toilet merry-go-round, the art is disturbing and brilliant, demented and childlike at the same time. There are Muslim and violent overtones, sitting side by side in chaos with an eerie Harikrishnas Christmas song playing on a loud loop. It was "house of a thousand corpses" meets "Dr. Seuss" on acid.

Dusk would be the perfect time to see both the detail and the scale of the installation. If the neighbors or the police don't shut it down, we will be back!!

Day of the dead 15th annual Dia de Los Muertos festival at Hollywood Forever

Quinceanera + Dia de los Muertos – A match made in Heaven

Every year we look forward to the annual Dia de los Muertos celebration at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
And with the Quinceanera theme – the potential of seeing hundreds of teens in brightly colored hoop dresses made it even more irresistible to photograph.
This event does a great job at celebrating culture and family by using art, music and costumes to tell the story of the departed.
Family altars are becoming more and more sophisticated, using LED instead of candle light, metal sculptures instead of paper mache, often pushing the boundaries of what is traditional.
The cemetery is so well utilized for this festival - with the entertainment, food and art being spread out so that you get the full experience of the space, even in the dark.
I'm always sad when its over, but there are always bands and movies – so we'll be back there soon enough.

LA MudPeople

I'd never been that close to the LA River.
And I never thought I'd be spending a Sunday afternoon  with the "urban primitives" known as the LA mudpeople on an impromptu walkabout with three of its members.

The sky was stormy, and it was unusually quiet at this location, considering we were steps away from Atwater Village.
A film crew and a small group of us watched as two men and a woman applied mud to their bodies, adorned themselves with rose petals, and stood in a circle holding hands before putting on their masks.

The whole ritual was beautiful to watch and the trio had a familiarity and fluidness to what their group leader Mollet, a renowned sculptor and poet, referred to as a "non-performance."
After about 30 minutes of exploring in the river, the group moved up to Atwater Village to interact with the locals, who seemed to accept it all in stride as another eclectic day in the village.
