You could see the bouncy Titanic Slide from half a mile down the beach, but as you got closer, it was the wide array of Pirates roaming the pier that caught my attention. The sound of exploding cannon echoed off the pier as a vintage ship drifted past.
This last weekend, the Belmont Shore pier hosted one of many festivals that kick off the summer season of sea festivals held in Long beach.
For some reason, this festival attracted a motley crew of people from your average family sporting pirate Halloween costumes complete with plastic swords to supermodels dressed to the nines in film quality costumes, all dancing, drinking and frolicking in the sun. At least 20 Jack Sparrows were in tow most Depp-like in manner and dress but some were the embodiment of Keith Richards as they raised their tankards and sang a rousing rendition of “ A Pirates Life” in newly acquired British accents.
We wandered to the end of the pier to hear the band, a ragtag mix of performers in costume, playing a wide array of music and complete with concertina and toy piano.
Vendors were on hand in case you needed a corset, vintage sword or $1000 harpsichord.
Next year we’ll block out the weekend and spend the nights camped out on the beach in the makeshift renaissance village. See you there matey!!
