Day Of the Dead – Dia de los Muertos 2009
The Hollywood Forever Cemetery has been hosting this powerful event for 10 years. This was our fourth year and for the first time we felt a personal connection that gave us pause to remember how important this day is to those who have lost someone.
This year we went on Friday to view the setup that goes into this event, and had a chance to really take in the cemetery and see the spectacular light that hits the tombstones at dusk. In contrast, Saturday was packed with the sound of music, dancing and celebration filling the warm October night. As usual the food, art and altar presentations were impressive. There were twice as many altars as last year, as well as the lively Aztec dancers and an army of revelers in skeleton makeup and elaborate costumes. Every time we go to HFC, we’re glad that Tyler Cassidy had the vision to see the property as a unique venue to feature art, music and cinema, and this event is definitely the highlight of the season.
