THE SALTON SEA

In 1950, it was known as the “Salton Riviera”. The resilient residents who still make this area their home believe that it will rise again. The Salton Sea is a unique man-made body of seawater 60 miles outside of Palm Springs – 35 miles in length and 15 miles wide. In the 50’s and 60’s, the area showed tremendous promise and thousands of tourists visited the area each year. That was until 1976 when the banks overflowed and the yacht club and most of the waterfront businesses and homes were flooded by storms and excessive run-off from the surrounding Imperial Valley farms.

So what… you ask? The ungodly smell, the unsavory characters in the trailer parks, the ’06 expiration date on the coffeemate at the Imperial market. Who cares and why save it? It needs to be saved for several reasons. First, it is one of the last California wetlands in existence. Over 60 species of birds call this area home. Even more disturbing than that, every summer, thousands of Tilapia literally die-out due to lack of oxygen and litter the beaches each year. Birds are dying of botulism by the hundreds, with wildlife personnel just barely keeping ahead of the devastation. Second, If the sea dies, the dry riverbed will become a health hazard that could threaten the entire Imperial Valley farming community and neighboring Palm Springs. Thirdly, it is a place of somewhat ethereal beauty and serenity. As I sat on the bank of the North Shore, on the sand made of mollusks, next to a decaying shed, I was lulled into a sense of beauty and peace that I seldom find this close to Los Angeles. Sonny Bono was a huge champion of this area, his family dedicating a Bird Refuge area in his name. He too, believed this area could be restored to its former glory. It can - it should, we can not sit by and let another natural resource disappear from California. Look it up people, go see it for yourself.

Guess I was expecting dusty books, a few pieces of art and a cactus or two. Then we turned a corner and the light hit the first statue of the north vista.

The grass lawn looked to be about the length of a football field. Holding guard on each side of the grass were statues, if I were to guess, from the Greek mythology period, about two foot apart all the way down either side, ending in a large fountain.

The light was perfect, hitting the faces of the cherubs, beasts and warriors. Each statue was originally placed against a stately palm, but now bank a wall of tall shrubs. The baroque fountain at the end of the garden was shipped from New York and came on the train packed in 48 boxes.

Overall a great day. Worth exploring again in more detail when the Japanese garden is re-opened and the weather is cooler. And I guess we missed the interactive botanical garden. Venus flytrap interactive?

Several years ago, we got wind of a flash mob pillow fight happening at the Grove in Los Angeles.

Sadly, security was alerted and the event was shut down before it started, even resulting in some arrests for persistent pillow fighting enthusiasts.

Thankfully, the movement has grown in strength and popularity and held in more of a public forum. Case in point was the 2011 International Pillow Fight held this weekend in downtown Los Angeles.

This event brought out the young, old and the costumed. From Ninjas to Mario brothers to the lone tooth fairy, hundreds of pillow-wielding fighters congregated on the lawn at Pershing Square at 2pm.

From the moment the megaphone horn sounded, the pillow fighters continued to battle until they ran out of steam 45 minutes later, with millions of feathers flying through the air and covered the ground like a down comforter.

Over 100 cities worldwide were scheduled to participate on April 2, in this flash mob event which has gained popularity in the last several years.

Lifeguard towers are used to watch and supervise swimmers in order to preventdrownings and other dangers. Lifeguards scan for trouble from the structures, which vary from beach bungalows by the ocean to poolside towers. Lifeguard towers are also used to spot sharks and other threats.

The towers have featured in television shows including Baywatch. Their construction is sometimes paid for with fundraisers, and their operation and staffing is subject to funding availability. Design contests have challenged architects to offer their visions of the structures.

History

Reggie Jones, 77 and the "oldest lifeguard at Jones Beach" in 2004 reflected on the beach's history and his work, "From his wooden lifeguard tower." He remembered, "when everything was closed on Sundays -- the blue laws -- and most families had one car and there were no downtown shopping malls. For 25 cents you got in the car and took the kids to the beach. This was the poor man's Riviera." He wore the "itchy" one-piece woolen lifeguard suit "instead of the Tommy Hilfiger trunks that are today's standard issue." Fashions of beachgoers also changed with "The girls are wearing dental floss" as opposed to the dresses that he remembered being worn. Jones Beach gets more visitors annually than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined with 8 million people visiting in 2003, a steep drop from the 13.3 million who visited in 1970.

Got an opportunity to check out a friend of mine's art show down in Costa Mesa Saturday night. He had casually told us he was doing sculptures from Surfboards a while ago, but to actually see the pieces up close was amazing. The pieces were bright, bold and unique. The gallery was a great space at the Camp that used to be a scuba shop. Nothing better than some great Greek wine, interesting people and beautiful art.

First year at the Cinegear, held at the Paramount Backlot. Great to see all the new gear and get up close and personal with some new equipment I've had my eye on. Scored a ticket to the VIP reception on Friday night at the FujiFilm presentation. On Saturday, sat in on a panel with the crew behind the making of the new film, "inception". Overall, a great event, and only heightens my interest in finding out more of what my 5D can do.
